Cangas, capital of the municipality with the same name, is a sailor town which grew close to the sea. It stands opposite the city of Vigo, in the estuary with the same name, but its coastline, full of beaches, is bathed by the water from Aldán's estuary too. Cangas is a vivacious place, it has as much economical activity as social and cultural ones, maybe due to its nearness to the main galician cities and thanks to good connections. Its inhabitants are friendly, kind and hospitable people and they enjoy the warm weather this town possesses throughout the whole year sitting on the terraces of the multiple coffee-shops and restaurants, including those where you can taste a wide variety of “tapas”.
PROMINENT PLACES
In Cangas the seafront promenade, from the town centre to Rodeira Beach, along with the old town, constitutes one of the most outstanding monumental sites on the Galician coast. Cangas has a rich artistic heritage that is mainly concentrated in the old part of the town, currently in the process of being refurbished. When walking in the streets you can really appreciate some interesting specimens of popular maritime architecture. Besides in the historic town centre we can find too beautiful samples of religious architecture as the Ex-Colegiata de Santiago that has a Renaissance style doorway considered as one of the most harmonious throughout Galicia. Right in the heart of the town, very close to the historical centre you can find the marine and maritime terminal.
BEACHES
Doubtlessly one of the main attractions of the town is its urban beach: Rodeira. This beach has nearly one kilometer long and threre is wooden boardwalk with splendid views to the neighbour city of Vigo. This beach is big and also very comfortable due to its proximity to the town centre.
Despite its attractiveness, anyone visiting the coastline can not fail to visit and enjoy plenty of other more beaches situated in the rural area: it covers a total of 38 sandbars, many of them awarded a blue flag status. Besides, when you are in Cangas, it's mandatory to visit the best beach in the world according to the newspaper “The Guardian”, that is Rodas Beach in the neighbouring Cies Islands.
COMMUNICATIONS
Cangas, and its surroundings, are very well connected with the main galician cities, something that contributes to its continuous growth and also facilitates tourism. By land, the fast lane CG4.1 joins the region with the motorway A9 (Vigo / Pontevedra / Santiago / A Coruña) allowing to get to Vigo in less than half an hour (30 Kms), Peinador Airport (33 Kms) or Pontevedra (38 Kms). The passenger ship is a good alternative to reach Vigo due to the short duration of the trip (20 minutes) and the frequency of the service. Travel is also the right means of transport to reach Cies Islands (departing from Cangas harbour) or to go visiting Ons Island (departing from Aldán or Bueu harbours).
